My photos are raw and simple, which is their charm

On March 11, 2003, while employed by Rolling Stone Magazine as a reporter, I“embedded” with 1st Recon Battalion Bravo Second Platoon, US Marine Special Forces.

They are elites who usually parachute behind enemy lines. There were 270 men in the whole unit, but fewer than 100 in the front line humvee teams.

They were in more ambushes and firefights than any any other unit in the invasion -and they were colorful characters, who became the basis of my book Generation Kill and the HBO miniseries.
